Free Culture Manifesto

The mission of the Free Culture movement is to build a bottom-up, participatory structure to society and culture, rather than a top-down, closed, proprietary structure. Through the democratizing power of digital technology and the Internet, we can place the tools of creation and distribution, communication and collaboration, teaching and learning into the hands of the common person -- and with a truly active, connected, informed citizenry, injustice and oppression will slowly but surely vanish from the earth.

We believe that culture should be a two-way affair, about participation, not merely consumption. We will not be content to sit passively at the end of a one-way media tube. With the Internet and other advances, the technology exists for a new paradigm of creation, one where anyone can be an artist, and anyone can succeed, based not on their industry connections, but on their merit.

We refuse to accept a future of digital feudalism where we do not actually own the products we buy, but we are merely granted limited uses of them as long as we pay the rent. We must halt and reverse the recent radical expansion of intellectual property rights, which threaten to reach the point where they trump any and all other rights of the individual and society.

The freedom to build upon the past is necessary for creativity and innovation to thrive. We will use and promote our cultural heritage in the public domain. We will make, share, adapt, and promote open content. We will listen to free music, look at free art, watch free film, and read free books. All the while, we will contribute, discuss, annotate, critique, improve, improvise, remix, mutate, and add yet more ingredients into the free culture soup.

We will help everyone understand the value of our cultural wealth, promoting free software and the open-source model. We will resist repressive legislation which threatens our civil liberties and stifles innovation. We will oppose hardware-level monitoring devices that will prevent users from having control of their own machines and their own data.

We won't allow the content industry to cling to obsolete modes of distribution through bad legislation. We will be active participants in a free culture of connectivity and production, made possible as it never was before by the Internet and digital technology, and we will fight to prevent this new potential from being locked down by corporate and legislative control. If we allow the bottom-up, participatory structure of the Internet to be twisted into a glorified cable TV service -- if we allow the established paradigm of creation and distribution to reassert itself -- then the window of opportunity opened by the Internet will have been closed, and we will have lost something beautiful, revolutionary, and irretrievable.

The future is in our hands; we must build a technological and cultural movement to defend the digital commons.

Ooh-the Bluesman just loves all that. Gives me chills. Everybody-Fight The Power, more correctly-,"Let's Take the Power Back!"

Cooperation through the ether

Just got a gracious affirmation from author John Hodgman, "Areas of My Expertise." John's book contains some essays on Hobos, which I will be reciting over the 700 Hobos roll call on future GALU shows. Keep your ears open for that. In the meantime pick up a copy and find out about his wacky take on a bevy of factual information presented in a witty compelling manner.

Ghoul Cool

GLU's favorite student organization: Free Culture, has a drive going to "Bring Dead Art Back to Life."

What the hell?

Ever wanted to bring something back from the dead? Well, you still can't revive old Fido, but you can bring dead art back to life! Most art doesn't make it into the history books – in fact, it's often seen by only a handful of people before it vanishes into dusty oblivion. [More]

But now, thanks to a growing movement to use Creative Commons licensing and the public domain to keep art available and reusable, it's possible to breathe new life into art that would otherwise be forgotten. Best of all, it's legal!Link

Well friends here we are, with a little bit of sadness(I'll miss Julius and Dan) we arrive at the conclusion of Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom podcast. Fortunately, Cory continues to dream and brainstorm and write, write, write. I hope to read more of Cory's work in the near-future. Please listen to next podcast series: Free Culture. The content deals a lot with what Cory deals with at his day job- a non-fiction book that is fascinating, written by a true scholar, but reads like a novel.

Mouthful Begin's with "M":55

Was in a great mood and had good energy when I did this spontaneous story built on song titles that begin with "m". Hope you enjoy it. The character names were not changed to protect the innocent, any similarities they have to "cult leaders" hosting other podcasts is due to pure whimsy.

At the risk of being edundant I encourage evrybody to head by Evil Genius Chronicles and read some of the inspired blogging and listen to some Grade A Prime podcasts inspired by Dave's recent attendance at Converge South. Leave Brother Dave a comment and tell him the Bluesman sent you.

The musical bed I almost went to sleep on: Roll On 2:42 The Twin Atlas
The songs for the story are as follows:
Mindstalking 3:55 Lunascape
Millionaire Girlfriend 4:23 Jonathan Coulton
Michelle 4:12 The Homesicks
Mr. Insecurity 3:20 Agent Sparks
Mastermind 3:34 Deltron
Miss Goma 6:52 P. Kalle

Free Culture: Introduction

Here is an advance on first installment of new series that will commence in about 2 weeks upon conclusion of Down and Out. Cory D. concurred that this book is an excellent choice and a very timely piece of material for evryone to be thinking about and acting upon. Please check the links on Professor Lawrence Lessig, author of Free Culture-they are very impressive and numerous. This is one professor not content to remain in the lofty towers of academia, but is rather a very active presence in the numerous organizations he participates in, and has a great passion for raising our awareness towards the enemies of our free usage of information technologies.

All music is published under Creative Commons.

DAO9: Chapter 8

It is indeed that time again. I must tell you our prolific friend Cory never ceases to impress me. He's been doing his own podcast of story based on his grandmother's childhood memories while he globe trots for EFF, boingboing blogging non-stop. Recent appearance as guest on TWIT #25 really rocked. He was really in fine form on that one. Don't forget to check out new novel "Theme Punks" in weekly serial on Salon.

Funny how our brain’s work…

I must have heard about Jonathan Coulton, or heard songs of his numerous times, primarily on Dave Slusher’s Evil Genius Chronicles. Since I’m virtually lyric deaf(insensitive to lyrics, sensitive to music) I never realized what Jonathan was doing that is special or what his songs are about. Then I was listening to Winging It with Evo Terra and he had a guest(August Trometer of iPodderX ) that brought up Jonathan and the content of his music. Jonathan is another artist that is publishing under Creative Commons and just recently quit his job to concentrate on his music. Please support Jonathan with donation if you like and download his music.

I've started podcasting!

This from one of our favorite author's-Cory Doctorow: I've finally started podcasting! I love reading my stuff aloud, but it's not practical for me to find quiet places to sit down with a mic and a Powerbook and record. So the idea is that I'm going to record my stories in serial form from wherever I am: hotel rooms, friends' sofas, airport lounges, whatever, and post 'em. You can subscribe to the feed here, or download individual installments as MP3s here. The podcast is also available through iTunes. Thanks to the Internet Archive for hosting the MP3s and to Feedburner for munging the feed. I've started the podcast by reading aloud from a novellette-in-progress called "After the Siege," inspired by my grandmother's hair-raising stories of being a little girl in Leningrad during the 900-day Siege of Leningrad, which she recounted this summer while we were at a family reunion in St Petersburg, Russia (Leningrad that was).
